Hey fellow dog lovers! Are you dreaming of summer adventures but can’t bear the thought of leaving your furry best friend behind? Well, you’re in luck! Summer 2025 is shaping up to be the year of the dog-friendly getaway, and I’m here to share my top picks for destinations that will welcome you and your pup with open paws. Get ready for wagging tails, sandy beaches, and unforgettable memories!

Why Travel with Your Dog?

For me, leaving my golden retriever, Buddy, at home is simply not an option. He’s part of the family, and adventures are always better when he’s by my side. Traveling with your dog strengthens your bond, encourages you to explore at a slower pace, and introduces you to hidden gems you might otherwise miss. Plus, who can resist those puppy-dog eyes when you’re trying to order room service? (Just kidding… mostly!)

Top Dog-Friendly Destinations for Summer 2026

1. Coastal Charm in Cannon Beach, Oregon

Oh, Cannon Beach! The dramatic coastline, the iconic Haystack Rock, and the surprisingly dog-friendly atmosphere make this one of my absolute favorite spots. Buddy loves chasing the waves, digging in the sand, and greeting fellow beach-loving pups. Many of the restaurants have outdoor patios where dogs are welcome, and there are plenty of pet-friendly accommodations to choose from.

Tip: Be sure to check the tide charts before heading out. Low tide offers the most space for exploring and playing!

2. Hiking Havens in Asheville, North Carolina

If you and your dog are more into mountain trails than sandy beaches, Asheville is your paradise. The Blue Ridge Mountains offer endless hiking opportunities, many of which are dog-friendly. We spent days exploring trails with breathtaking views, stopping at waterfalls for a refreshing dip, and enjoying the cool mountain air. Asheville itself is a vibrant city with a thriving arts scene and plenty of breweries with outdoor seating where dogs are welcome.

Tip: Pack plenty of water for both you and your pup, especially during the summer months. The trails can be challenging!

3. Wine Country Woofing in Sonoma, California

Yes, you read that right! Wine country can be dog-friendly! While your pup might not be able to sample the Cabernet Sauvignon, many wineries in Sonoma welcome dogs on their outdoor patios and in their vineyards. We spent a delightful afternoon strolling through the vines, enjoying the sunshine, and sipping on delicious wine while Buddy sniffed around and made new friends. It’s the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

Tip: Call ahead to confirm a winery’s dog policy before visiting. Some may have restrictions on certain areas.

4. Lakeside Leisure in Lake Placid, New York

For a classic summer vacation vibe, Lake Placid offers stunning scenery, refreshing lake waters, and a relaxed atmosphere that’s perfect for dogs. We rented a cabin on the lake, spent our days swimming and kayaking (Buddy even got his own little life jacket!), and enjoyed evenings grilling on the deck while watching the sunset. There are also plenty of hiking trails nearby for exploring the Adirondack Mountains.

Tips for a Smooth Dog-Friendly Getaway

  • Book accommodations in advance: Pet-friendly hotels and rentals fill up quickly, especially during peak season.
  • Pack a dog travel kit: Include food, water, bowls, leash, waste bags, medications, and a favorite toy.
  • Check vaccination and health requirements: Make sure your dog is up-to-date on all vaccinations and has a clean bill of health before traveling.
  • Be respectful of local rules and regulations: Keep your dog on a leash where required, clean up after them, and be mindful of other people and animals.
  • Most Importantly: Have Fun!
